Video Remote Interpreting (VRI)

On- Demand Video Remote Interpreting allows customers to access a video interpreter almost instantly (typically between 0 – 30 seconds) using any computer, laptop, or tablet such as Android or ipad devices. When using a computer or laptop, customers can access the portal via Chrome web browser. When using a mobile device such as a tablet, users must download the app (Service will not work on a mobile web browser)

Simply log into the platform at slusa.interpretmanager.com, enter your login credentials, select the language needed from the dropdown list, choose the interpreter gender (if desired), and click “Call” You and the interpreter will be able to view each other.

Voice/Audio Only

Accessed through the same VRI platform as mentioned above, the only difference is that you choose to have video off. You and the interpreter will be able to hear each other but not see each other. This option is available for all foreign languages however, cannot be used with ASL because ASL is a visual language which requires video.

If the person needing interpreting is not in the room with you, simply ask the interpreter to dial out and connect the session in a three way conference call.

Over the Phone Interpreting (OPI)

Using any regular or mobile telephone, simply dial into the platform, enter your assigned pin number, verbally select the language needed, and you will be routed to an interpreter in the desired language within seconds.

If the non-English speaking person is with you, simply place the phone on speaker so that all involved can hear and speak to the interpreter. If the person is not with you, ask the interpreter to dial out and place you on a three way conference call.

Pros:

• Cost effective – OnDemand interpreting is less expensive with low minimum charges making it an appealing option
• No Waiting or Planning – You can access an interpreter almost instantly in any of 300 languages including ASL.
• Service Categories – Your account will be set up with your basic category such as Medical, Educational, Legal. All interpreters are categorized based on certifications and experience so you can be sure your call will be routed to an interpreter with experience in your genre.
• Versatile – While all SLUSA on-demand interpreters are logged into the same platform via a laptop computer, our customers may access using a variety of methods such as computer, laptop, mobile device such as tablet or smart phone, or any regular telephone.

Cons:

• No Prep for Interpreters – Interpreters are thrown into random call scenarios with no prep time. This can cause a degradation in quality as interpreters are not able to assess the situation prior
• Should not Replace In Person Interpreters for Emergencies – An emergency situation always requires an interpreter onsite however, OnDemand service can be used as a short term bridge while waiting for an interpreter to arrive
• Subject to Bandwidth – Not all organizations have the appropriate bandwidth to handle high speed video calling
• Expensive Equipment – OnDemand Service requires IT equipment
• No Preferred Selection – Customers are not able to select the exact interpreter. Call routing is subject to which interpreters happen to be online and not currently taken in another call
• Wait Time Can Happen – During unexpected call volume surge, you may experience additional wait time to connect.
• Interpreter Time Limits – ASL interpreters typically require a team for longer assignments which is not currently possible in our platform, this means ASL interpreters may need to limit your call.
